Portrait Quilts

The No Rules Quilter's challenge for January was to make a portrait quilt.

Tam shared many art quilts which would fit into that category.  This is a butterfly inspired by Laurel Burch.

Tan used a real leaf as a pattern in this quilt.

This flower pot quilt is a mola design.

The watercolor background was painted by Linda.

Tam's Japanese flower.

Tam calls this one, "Giant Man Eating Houseplant".

Jane made "Quilter's Brain" for another club challenge.  Notice the bottom of the quilt, one of the rules was that the quilt should have a hanging sleeve.

Jane used this photo of a raindrop as her inspiration.

This is Jane's "View Thru A Dew Drop".

This is the quilt Linda made for our negative space challenge.

For this challenge, Linda choose to do a portrait of the view of a lady with her hand on her hip.

This close up shows the detailed quilting better.

Mary made a portrait of her daughter's parrot, Poly.

The following are other quilting projects that were shared with the group.

Joyce has been sewing postage stamp fabric which she plans to use to decorate her kitchen
(Placemats, toaster cover, etc).

Joyce made this flannel snowman quilt for the Habitat for Humanity quilt auction in the spring.

Joyce also made this princess quilt for the auction.

We had a number of guests visiting our meeting.  Nancy, a member of the art group JNKS shared some of her projects.  Cicada, below is a work in progress.  Cicada is the second in a series.

Below is one block of a quilt Nancy designed, Rhapsody.  The quilt was inspired by Ricky Tims.  The pieces are appliqued then sewn together.

Nancy has been working on monoprints.  They were printed on paper and could be framed.  Below are some of the prints she shared with us.

Mary shared hot pads she received for Christmas from her daughters.  They looked like modern quilts.  The backing fabric was designed by one daughter who had it printed at Spoonflower.  Her other daughter designed and made the tops.

Mary shared a Christmas stocking she made for her daughter in law.

Jessica showed us the whimsical lettering she has been working on.  She plans to incorporate the lettering into quilts using free motion quilting.

This is a mystery quilt top Francine made at a workshop.

After show and tell, Wanda shared information on free motion quilting with the group.

This  sampler quilt was a quilt as you go.

Wanda also used her whole-cloth quilt to give us ideas for quilting.

Wanda explained ways to do trapunto and types of batting were discussed.

Wanda and Nancy shared books they thought would be helpful.  Some of the authors also have online tutorials.

Thank you to Barb for taking notes to go along with the photos.
